Finding Tranquility on Hawaiian Hike-To Beaches

Given the herd mentality of tourism, it’s hard to believe that visitors can still find solitude on Hawaiian beaches. This is especially true on Maui, where a “monkey see, Maui do” behavior means every turnout seems to be filled with social media enthusiasts not wanting to miss out. But many beaches are still pretty much outside the realm of Instagram.

Trails to hike-to beaches are normally unmarked and unsigned. You will find others who have gone before you, of course, but effectively, it’s  a reward for those willing to venture off the beaten path.

Kauai and the Big Island have the most untrod sand, although the North Shore of Oahuhas several surprises. One way to find these beaches is to get friendly with locals. Another way is to go down every road headed to the coast and keep you eyes peeled. A third way to find the hidden charms is to read a Trailblazer guide (one for each island) and follow the detailed directions. The authors, over the course of 25 years, have done the legwork for you.
