Finding Pila’a Beach on Kauai
Some clues:
“To reach the pretty Pila‘a Beaches—a ‘fantasy island’ getaway—go to the right when you reach the bottom of the trail at the water. It’s a .5-mile scramble on black boulders at the edge of coastal vegetation. After the balancing act, you’ll cross a small stream and reach the first beach, which is backed by a parklike lawn. Normally, you can reach the second beach, which is home to several cottages, by walking sand between boulders around the cliff. Both beaches are beautifully situated among palms and other beach trees. Be Aware: A hiking pole and sturdy shoes will greatly aid the half-hour of boulder hopping along the coast. Also, a short distance down from trailhead parking is a mountainside trail to the right that traverses steeply to Pila‘a, but is difficult to follow; the coastal route, though not a cake walk, is easy to follow.”
